Megève

France

Nestled in the heart of the French Alps, Megève offers a truly distinctive ski holiday experience, blending the sophisticated charm of a luxurious resort with the authentic warmth of a traditional mountain village. Long before it became a premier winter sports destination, Megève was a thriving agricultural village, a heritage still evident in its beautifully preserved old farmhouses and classic Savoyard architecture. This rich history, coupled with elegant wooden chalets and pedestrian boulevards, creates an atmosphere of timeless chic amidst the vast Evasion Mont-Blanc ski region. Guests can enjoy exclusive sporting, social, and gastronomic facilities, while the car-free village centre enhances its tranquil ambiance, with horse-drawn carriages offering a romantic mode of transport. Indeed, Megève maintains its wonderful ambience and charm, centered on its narrow cobbled streets, and has expanded to offer a wide array of accommodation, restaurants, and shops.

The Enchanting Village of Megève

Megève is more than just a ski resort; it is a vibrant village that lives and breathes year-round, captivating visitors with its preserved heritage, authentic atmosphere, and unique art de vivre. The pedestrianised cobbled streets of the historic centre invite leisurely strolls, where elegant boutiques, inviting cafés, and boulangeries line the pathways. The village square, often animated with events and markets, serves as the social heart, framed by traditional chalets and offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Notable landmarks include the historic Saint-Jean-Baptiste church with its iconic bell tower and the serene Chemin du Calvaire. Unlike many purpose-built ski stations, Megève has retained its soul and authenticity through centuries, evolving from a farming community into an iconic ski resort while preserving its architectural character and deep-rooted traditions. The resort's relatively low altitude at 1113m ensures a cosy, immersive village experience, though this can sometimes mean variable snow quality at village level; however, a holiday in Megève is about so much more than just skiing.

Beyond the slopes, Megève offers a plethora of activities for those seeking diverse winter entertainment. Indulge in culinary delights at its renowned restaurants, browse art galleries, or simply soak in the unique atmosphere. The village hosts various cultural events, festivals, and sporting gatherings throughout the year, ensuring there's always something engaging to experience. For a truly classic touch, a ride in one of the horse-drawn carriages through the snow-covered streets is a quintessential Megève experience.

Skiing the Expansive Evasion Mont-Blanc

Megève is seamlessly integrated into the sprawling Evasion Mont-Blanc ski area, a magnificent domain that offers an incredible variety of terrain for all abilities. The Evasion Mont-Blanc ski area encompasses not only Megève but also other charming resorts such as Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc, Saint-Nicolas, Les Contamines-Hauteluce, Combloux, and La Giettaz. This vast interconnected network boasts an impressive 445 kilometres of mapped ski runs, serviced by approximately 110 to 111 ski lifts. The slopes ascend from a base elevation of 850m to a top elevation of 2353m, providing a substantial vertical drop and breathtaking panoramas of the highest peak in Europe, Mont Blanc.

Within the Evasion Mont-Blanc area, skiers will discover a well-balanced distribution of pistes: 37 green runs, 63 blue runs, 84 red runs, and 33 black runs, making a total of 217 marked slopes. This diversity ensures that beginners have ample gentle slopes to learn on, while intermediate and advanced skiers can find challenging reds and blacks to hone their skills. Megève itself comprises three primary interconnected skiing areas: Rochebrune/Côte 2000, Le Jaillet, and Mont d'Arbois. The Mont d'Arbois sector is particularly notable for its excellent nursery slopes situated just above the village, making it an ideal starting point for novices. A great concentration of gentle improver slopes can also be found between Mont d'Arbois and Mont Joux. For cross-country enthusiasts, Megève is an excellent choice, offering over 40 kilometres of marked trails both in the valley and at higher altitudes.

For those seeking thrills, the Mont Joux snow park, centrally located within the Evasion Mont-Blanc ski area, caters to freestyle skiers and snowboarders. While the Evasion Mont-Blanc area might not have the "steep 'n' deep" reputation of some neighbouring resorts, it still offers fantastic off-piste opportunities, particularly for those who appreciate a more relaxed atmosphere on a powder day. Generally, the best snow conditions in Megève can be found on the shady slopes of Côte 2000, which also tends to be the last sector of the ski area to close at the end of the season.
