Unrivalled Skiing in the Grand Massif
Les Carroz serves as a crucial gateway to the expansive Grand Massif ski area, one of the largest and most diverse in the French Alps. This interconnected domain links five distinctive resorts – Flaine, Les Carroz, Morillon, Samoëns, and Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval – creating a vast playground for winter sports enthusiasts of all abilities. The Grand Massif boasts an impressive 265 kilometres of pisted terrain, accessible via a high-performance network of 62 lifts. The skiable terrain stretches dramatically from a base altitude of 700 metres to a summit of 2500 metres, offering a remarkable vertical drop of 1800 metres and breathtaking panoramic views, including the majestic Mont Blanc.
The Grand Massif's 139 marked pistes cater comprehensively to every skill level. Beginners will find an excellent selection of 23 green runs and numerous gentle, wide slopes perfect for learning the ropes and building confidence. The resort areas, including Les Carroz, provide dedicated learning zones to ensure a safe and encouraging environment for those new to skiing. Intermediate skiers are particularly well catered for, with 61 blue runs and 44 red runs that wind along ridge tops and through tranquil forests. The Flaine bowl offers wide, treeless pistes ideal for carving and progressing skills, while the runs above Les Carroz, Morillon, and Samoëns are famously tree-lined, providing picturesque descents and often better visibility in inclement weather.
Advanced skiers and snowboarders will not be disappointed, with 11 challenging black runs and extensive off-piste opportunities, particularly around the high-altitude Flaine bowl. For the truly adventurous, the Combe de Gers offers an exhilarating 800-metre vertical drop in virgin snow, best explored with a guide after fresh snowfall. A highlight for many intermediates and experts alike is Les Cascades, a magnificent 14-kilometre blue run that begins at the Grandes Platières in Flaine and winds its way through a stunning nature reserve, past frozen waterfalls, all the way down to Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval. This descent is more than just a run; it's an immersive journey through a spectacular alpine landscape. Another unique experience is the Marvel trail, a 5-kilometre route through a centuries-old forest, perfect for beginners and those seeking a scenic, gentle ski. The predominantly north-facing slopes across the Grand Massif contribute to excellent snow quality, ensuring enjoyable conditions from early December into spring.
The 2026/2027 ski season in Les Carroz is scheduled to run from December 12, 2026, to April 11, 2027, offering a generous window to experience this incredible ski area. With such a vast and varied terrain, the Grand Massif ensures that every skier, from the absolute beginner to the seasoned expert, will find their perfect piste and challenge.
